What is Scroll Speed Testing?
Scroll speed testing measures your ability to scroll using a mouse wheel or trackpad, calculated as SPS (Scrolls Per Second). This skill is valuable for gaming scenarios requiring rapid scrolling, navigation efficiency, and competitive gaming where scroll actions are essential.
Scroll speed differs from clicking speed, requiring smooth, controlled movements rather than rapid clicking. Our scroll test provides accurate measurements and helps you develop better scrolling techniques for gaming and productivity.
Ranking System
Our scroll speed ranking system evaluates performance levels:
- •Beginner (30-40 SPS): Starting level for new users. Focus on developing basic scrolling consistency.
- •Skilled (50-60 SPS): Intermediate level showing improved scroll wheel control and rhythm.
- •Expert (60-70 SPS): Advanced level demonstrating excellent scrolling mastery.
- •Master (75+ SPS): Elite level achieved by top performers with exceptional scroll speed and precision.
Your ranking is determined by your personal best SPS score and appears on leaderboards and your profile.
Why Practice Scroll Speed?
Improving your scroll speed offers several advantages:
- Gaming Performance: Many games require rapid scrolling for weapon switching, inventory management, or quick navigation.
- Productivity: Faster scrolling improves efficiency when browsing documents, code, or web pages.
- Competitive Gaming: Games like Minecraft PvP benefit from quick scroll-based weapon switching.
- Navigation Skills: Better scroll control enhances overall computer navigation and workflow efficiency.
- Hand Coordination: Regular practice improves fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.
- Muscle Memory: Developing consistent scrolling patterns creates muscle memory for better performance.
Scrolling Techniques
Master these techniques to improve your scroll speed:
Smooth Continuous Scrolling
Maintain steady, continuous scroll wheel movements without stopping. This technique provides consistent SPS and is most sustainable.
Burst Scrolling
Use rapid, controlled bursts of scrolling followed by brief pauses. This method can achieve higher peak SPS but may sacrifice consistency.
Two-Finger Technique
Use two fingers on the scroll wheel for alternating rapid scrolls. This advanced method can increase speed but requires practice.
Trackpad Gestures
On trackpads, use smooth two-finger scrolling gestures. While typically slower than mouse wheels, trackpads offer precise control.
Hybrid Approach
Combine techniques based on the situation. Use smooth scrolling for consistency and bursts for peak performance.
Scroll Test – Free Mouse Scroll Speed & Wheel Test
High-precision PPS and scroll distance
Welcome to our Scroll Test. We built this because mouse wheels can start skipping while scrolling through long code files, and it's hard to tell if it's hardware or the browser.
This tool gives an instant, high-precision readout of your Pixels Per Second (PPS) and total scroll distance to help you diagnose mouse issues or push your scrolling speed to the limit.
What is a Scroll Test?
Performance and diagnostic measurement
A Scroll Test measures how quickly and accurately your mouse wheel can move through digital content. Unlike a CPS test which measures clicks, this test tracks the deltaY values (vertical movement) sent from your mouse to the browser. We measure your performance in Pixels Per Second (PPS) and Lines Per Second, giving you a clear picture of your wheel's "acceleration" and "snap."
How to Measure Your Scroll Speed
Getting an accurate reading
To get a valid score, follow these steps:
- 1Placement:Hover your cursor anywhere inside the 'Scroll Arena' above
- 2The Spin:Flick your scroll wheel as fast as possible in either direction
- 3The Result:The tool will instantly calculate your peak PPS and your average speed over a 5-second burst
- 4Directional Check:Try scrolling up and then down to see if your mouse wheel 'skips' or registers the wrong direction—a common sign of a failing encoder
Scroll Speed Benchmarks (PPS Tiers)
Based on standard 1000Hz gaming mice
Where do you stand? We've benchmarked these tiers based on standard 1000Hz gaming mice:
| PPS Range | Level | Description |
|---|---|---|

How to Fix Scroll Wheel "Jumping" Issues
Diagnostic repair guide
If your screen jumps up while you are scrolling down, your mouse encoder is likely dirty or failing. A quick fix is to unplug the mouse, turn it upside down, and scroll the wheel vigorously against a mousepad for 30 seconds. This often dislodges dust or hair trapped in the sensor. If that fails, a small blast of compressed air usually helps.
Unplug the mouse
Disconnect power to prevent electrical damage during cleaning
Flip & Scroll
Turn mouse upside down, scroll wheel vigorously against mousepad for 30 seconds to dislodge dust/hair
Compressed Air
Use short bursts of compressed air into wheel gap if manual cleaning fails
🔧 Advanced Fix: If cleaning doesn't work, the optical encoder inside may be degraded. This requires mouse disassembly or replacement.
Scroll Speed in Gaming: Minecraft, CS2, & Apex
Competitive edge mechanics
In many competitive games, players bind "Jump" to the scroll wheel (mwheeldown). This makes performing a Bhop (Bunny Hop) much easier, as the rapid inputs from the wheel ensure you jump the exact millisecond you hit the ground. A consistent scroll test score is vital to ensure you aren't missing jump windows.
Minecraft/CS2
Jump bound to scroll wheel (mwheeldown)
BENEFIT
Ensures jump on exact ground contact for bunny-hopping
Apex Legends
Weapon switching during gunfights
BENEFIT
Faster than number keys for mid-combat swaps
Valorant
Quick ability/weapon cycling
BENEFIT
Reduces TTK (Time To Kill) in tight situations
Productivity: Why PPS Matters for Data Scientists & Devs
Real-world professional applications
If you work with 10,000-row spreadsheets or 2,000-line scripts, a slow scroll wheel is a massive bottleneck. Increasing your Windows or macOS "Lines per Scroll" setting can save time, but it reduces precision. A high-quality mouse wheel allows you to have both: speed when flicking and precision when moving step-by-step.
📊 Data Analysts

JavaScript Mechanics: How This Tool Works
Technical implementation details
This tool listens for the wheel event in your browser. We capture the deltaY property, which represents the vertical scroll amount.
Because different browsers (Chrome vs. Firefox) handle scroll units differently, our tool normalizes the data to ensure that whether you are on a Mac Trackpad or a Windows Gaming Mouse, the PPS score remains consistent and comparable.
Horizontal Scroll Testing
Secondary thumb wheel performance
Some high-end mice (like the MX Master series) feature a secondary thumb wheel for horizontal scrolling. This is crucial for video editors (scrubbing timelines) and financial analysts navigating wide spreadsheets.
🎬 Video Editing
Scrub through timelines in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve with precise frame control
📊 Financial Analysis

"Scroll Finger" Tendonitis Warning
Repeatedly flicking a scroll wheel can lead to "Scroll Finger" (a form of tendonitis affecting the middle finger). If you experience pain in your middle finger, consider a mouse with a "Hyper-scroll" feature that requires less physical effort, or use Spacebar Scrolling (pressing the spacebar to move down a page) to give your joints a rest.
🙌 Prevention Tips
- • Use infinite scroll wheels to reduce repetitive motion
- • Take 5-minute breaks every 30 minutes of heavy scrolling
- • Perform finger stretches and wrist rotations regularly
- • Consider keyboard shortcuts (Page Down, Arrow keys) as alternatives
Browser Settings: Improving Your Experience
OS and browser optimization
🌐 Chrome Settings
Enable "Smooth Scrolling" in chrome://flags for a more fluid feel
🪟 Windows Settings
Go to Mouse Settings → "Choose how many lines to scroll each time." Setting this to 5-10 is the "Sweet Spot" for most users
🍎 macOS Settings
Natural scrolling (scrolling down to move the page up) is the default, but you can toggle this in System Settings → Trackpad/Mouse
Diagnosing a "Dead" Middle Click
Separate switch mechanism
Often, the scroll wheel spins but the "Middle Click" (Mouse 3) button fails. This is a separate mechanical switch located beneath the wheel. The scroll encoder and middle-click switch are independent components.
🔍 Testing: You can test your middle click button to see if the hardware switch itself is still registering inputs. If middle click fails but scrolling works, only the switch needs replacement—not the entire encoder.
